HS BBB: Rantoul Races Past Monticello

The Rantoul Eagles used a three-point barrage in the third quarter to blow past Monticello 68-54 in Illini Prairie Conference action from Rantoul High School Tuesday night.

Rantoul drained 6-of-8 three-point attempts in the third quarter and outscored Monticello 21-11 to open up a 55-30 lead.

Hayden Cargo hit four three during the outburst. He led all scorers with 16 points. The Eagles had three scorers in double-figures as Jimmy Nixon added 15 points despite leaving in the third quarter with an ankle injury. Kamrynn Rome added 14 points.

Monticello fell behind early 13-4 before cutting it to a 17-15 deficit with 26-seconds left in the first quarter but Nixon hit a three from the right wing with pressure in his face to end the quarter and give Rantoul at 20-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

They got within one at 26-25 with 3:52 to play in the second quarter but that would be the closest they would get, trailing by 19-points in the fourth quarter.

Alek Bundy converted a pair of three-point plays late in the fourth quarter to bring the Sages within 10 but it was too little too late at that point.

Bundy and David Alexander each scored 13 points for Monticello in their first conference loss of the season.

Ben Singleton added eight points and pulled down a game-high ten rebounds.

With the win, Rantoul remains undefeated in Illini Prairie action at 3-0 and improves to 9-11 overall.

The Sages suffer their first conference loss (1-1) with a four-game winning streak coming to an end. They drop to 15-4 overall.

The Sages return to action Friday night with a trip to Pontiac. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
