White Sox, Cardinals Make Moves Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline

The 2019 MLB trade deadline was on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. Unlike previous years, there is no waiver period in August, which means deals had to happen ahead of that aforementioned deadline. Some big names changed teams, with Marcus Stroman, Trevor Bauer and Zack Greinke all being part of trades.

The Cubs traded reliever Carl Edwards Jr. to the Padres for left-handed pitcher Brad Wleck. The Cubs also added speed, trading for utility man Tony Kemp from the Astros for the recently acquired Martin Maldanado.

Meanwhile, the White Sox traded reliever Nate Jones to the Texas Rangers for Joe Janeski and Ray Castro, both right-handed pitchers. The Rangers also receive international money compensation.

Other trade deadlines moves included a blockbuster trade between the Diamondbacks and the Astros. Ace Zack Greinke is headed to the Astros for former first round picks Seth Beer, JB Bukauskas, Corbin Martin and Josh Rojas.

The Astros also struck a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays receive outfielder Derek Fisher for struggling right-hander Aaron Sanches, starting pitcher Joe Biagini and prospect outfielder Cal Stevenson.

The Diamondbacks and the Miami Marlins struck a surprising deal mid-day Wednesday. The Diamondbacks acquire rookie right-hander Zac Gallen for top-100 shortstop prospect Jazz Chisholm. Gallen was a high-rising right-hander who dominated Triple-A before his recall in June.
