Little Room For Error in Final Stretch for Clinton

The Clinton Maroons enter week 8 action 4-3 overall and might just need to win-out to make the postseason.

Last year's 5-4 mark was not enough to get a spot in the playoffs and it is, even more, a possibility this year with a forfeit win among their total.

The Maroons are struggling offensively right now, their latest showing a 42-6 loss at Central A&M Friday night. They've scored a mere two touchdowns in three weeks.

Weeks 5-7 was going to be a gauntlet as Tuscola, Decatur St. Teresa and Central A&M were all ranked in the top 10 of their respective classes starting the season.

The Maroons were hoping to steal a win, maybe two, instead, they seemed punchless at best against the top-tier of the Central Illinois Conference and hit the final two weeks in essentially must-win territory.

Injuries have plagued the Maroons in the toughest stretch of their season, but in sports, it is rare you get a clean bill of health from start to finish.

The struggling Maroons get a chance to right things in week 8 when they welcome winless Sullivan to town. Off a 56-6 loss to Decatur St. Teresa Friday, the Redskins are allowing 40 points per game to their opponents.

Looking ahead is not an option for this team right now, but if the Maroons can take care of business, they will face a huge matchup against Warrensburg-Latham in week 9 on the road.

Five wins are likely not going to be enough to punch a ticket to the 3A playoffs, however, the Maroons can take a step in the right direction Friday night and begin to - as they say - play their best football at the right time.
