Buzzer-Beater Sends Salt Fork Past Monticello

Payton Taylor made a fadeaway jump shot as time expired and Salt Fork rallied past Monticello 49-48 in non-conference high school boys basketball action from Monticello Friday night.

Ethan Miller drained a three to put the Sages up 48-45 with 57 seconds left. Taylor scored on an offensive rebound with 32 seconds left.

After a Salt Fork timeout, Ryan Reeder took a full-court pass but missed the layup, and the Storm rebounded, however, turned it over on their ensuing possession.

After the Storm fouled their way to the bonus, Miller missed the front end of a one-and-the-bonus free throw. The Sages stopped a fast break with 1.5 seconds left.

Salt Fork on the inbound found Taylor at the baseline and the senior drained the fadeaway as time expired sending the Storm to their second win.

Taylor recorded a double-double with game-highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Garrett Kepley’s ferocious play in the second half continued as he scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half. Kepley was limited to just nine minutes in the first half because of foul trouble, and Monticello as a team battled foul trouble issues in the first half.

Ryan Reeder got off to a fast start with eight points in the first half but was held scoreless in the second half. Miller scored six and Dylan Gilanick scored five points off the bench in the first half for the Sages.

Monticello falls to 0-3 on the year while Salt Fork continues their fast start to move to 2-0 after an upset win over Arcola Tuesday to start their season.

The Sages host Auburn Tuesday night. Tip time from Monticello High School is 7 pm. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
