Illinois Splits Weekend Pod-Series in Michigan

The final of four games at Ray Fisher Stadium this weekend with a 7-3 win over Michigan State.

The Illini got an early lead with a run in the first inning courtesy of a Branden Comia RBI fielder's choice. They would go on to score four runs in the third inning and two in the fifth.

Sophomore Cam McDonald led the way at the plate for Illinois on Sunday. McDonald went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs, two runs and two walks. He delivered a 2-run single in the third and then an RBI double in the fifth. Sophomore Kellen Sarver also added an RBI double in the third inning.

Comia (2-for-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R) had another productive day and extended his on-base streak to a career-best 30 games. Over his four games this weekend, Comia hit .538/.600/.692 (7-for-13), with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored.

On the mound, freshman LHP Cole Kirschsieper (4.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 SO) started for the Illini.

Despite allowing seven hits, his only run allowed came after he departed the game with runners on first and third base. Freshman LHP Ryan O'Hara (W, 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO) came in the game for Kirschsieper and earned his first career win. He recorded all four of his outs via strikeout.

The Illini went 2-2 on the weekend, splitting their pair of games with both No. 13 Michigan (8-2) and Michigan State (5-5).

Illinois (6-6) will host their first series of the season next weekend against Northwestern in a three-game set at Illinois Field. First pitch of the home opener on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT, while Saturday and Sunday will begin at 1 p.m. CT.
