Late Trick Play Lifts No. 6 Monticello Past No. 5 Prairie Central

Joey Sprinkle hit Chris Brown on a double-reverse-flea-flicker and no. 6 (3A) Monticello beat No. 5 (4A) Prairie Central 19-15 Friday night in Illini Prairie Conference football action from Lewis Field in Fairbury.

As heard on WEZC, Prairie Central scored on a ten-yard touchdown run by junior Conner Casner with 1:09 and the Hawks converted the two-point conversion to make the score 15-12.

The ensuing kickoff was returned 30-yards by Brown to set the Sages up for their go-ahead score.

The Hawks drove 68 yards on the opening possession to take a 7-0 lead but did not score again Casner’s touchdown late.

After a slow start offensively, Joey Sprinkle kept a play alive with under a minute left in the second quarter and hit Tristan Foran for a 45 yard pass and then found Foran wide open in the back of the end zone on the next play for a nine-yard touchdown to bring them to 7-6 at the half.

Sprinkle connected with Hayden Graham on a 25-yard touchdown pass on a wheel route and gave the Sages a 12-7 lead.

Sprinkle finished 10-for-21 and 120 yards and three touchdowns and added 37 yards on the ground.

Hunter Williams picked off Kaden King on a third down with the Hawks driving.

Foran hauled in four catches for 64 yards with his touchdown. Brown was again limited Friday, managing only 12 yards on the ground and his 15-yard touchdown reception.

The Sages improve to 2-0 on the season and are scheduled to host Rantoul next Friday night.
