Monticello Overcomes Slow Start to Rout St. Joseph-Ogden

The Monticello Sages used big plays to score 43 straight points and overcome a slow start to beat St. Joseph-Ogden 43-8 in Illini Prairie Conference high school football Friday night in the season opener of the high school football season.

Senior quarterback Joey Sprinkle started slow, throwing two interceptions in his first seven pass attempts but a swing pass to Jacob Tackett turned into an 82-yard score by the standout sprinter and Monticello rolled from there.

Sprinkle connected with senior wideout Tristan Foran for 44 yards on the next possession right before halftime to put the Sages up 15-8.

A shovel pass that Tackett broke for a 71-yard run started the Monticello second half scoring and then Sprinkle connected again with Foran to end the third quarter on a 64-yard strike.

Tackett wasn’t done, and broke off a 58-yard run on a draw.

Junior quarterback Drew Shephard scored late on a keeper to conclude the scoring for the Sages.

Springle finished 8-for-16 for 307 yards, four touchdowns and two picks. Tackett totalled 227 total yards, 64 on the ground and 173 receiving for three total touchdowns. Tackett was the Piatt/DeWitt ServPro Player of the Game.

Foran finished with 149 yards receiving and two touchdowns on five receptions.

At 1-0, the Sages host IVC next Friday night. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
