Monticello Rolls Greenville in First Round of 3A Playoffs

Monticello got off to its best start of the  season and rolled to a 42-7 win over Greenville in the first round of the IHSA 3A high school playoffs from Monticello Saturday afternoon.

Spencer Mitze picked off the first play from scrimmage setting the Sages up at the 32 yard line in Greenville territory and Joey Sprinkle his Peyton Scott for a five-yard touchdown, the first of five touchdowns, as the Sages only rolled from there.

Sprinkle later connected with Triston Foran from 46-yards to put Monticello up 14-0. On a shovel pass to Jacob Tackett, Tackett broke free up the left sideline and outran the field for a 21-0 Monticello lead.

Just before halftime, Sprinkle unloaded a 65-yard strike to junior Tylor Bundy for a 28-0 halftime lead, the largest lead at the intermission by the Sages this year.

After Monticello went three-and-out to start the second half, Sprinkle hit Mitze for a 34-yard score and then on the ensuing possession, Tackett powered in from a yard out and Monticello used running clock the rest of the way to roll to the second round.

Sprinkle finished 12-for-19 for 273 yards through the air and five touchdowns and added 33 yards on the ground.

Tackett had 90-yards on the single reception for a touchdown added 50 yards on nine carries with another score.

Foran finished with four grabs for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Scott finished with three catches for 13 yards and a touchdown.

In addition to his interception and four catches for 54 yards with a touchdown, Mitze also helped a defensive front that put pressure on Comets junior quarterback Ryan Jackson all afternoon.

Greenville’s only score came late when Jackson connected with Peyton McCollough for a 58-yard touchdown.

The Comets end their season 5-5 while Monticello is now 8-2. They’ll travel to Benton, who beat Southwestern Piasa 42-0.
