UPDATED: Lady Sages Topple Warrensburg-Latham

As heard on WEZC and at dewittdailynews.com, the Monticello Lady Sages overcame a sluggish second quarter and persistent foul trouble to beat Warrensburg-Latham 46-37 in non-conference high school girl's basketball Thursday from the Sievers Center at Monticello High School.

 

Leading 9-5 after the first quarter, the Lady Sages were stifled offensively as Lizzie Stiverson was forced to the bench with two fouls.

 

Taking a gamble, Stiverson was inserted back into the lineup late in the second quarter and committed her third foul.

 

Brooke Oakley scored eight second quarter points, all from the free throw line, helping the Lady Cardinals take a 15-12 lead to the intermission.

 

The Lady Sages rallied back in the third quarter to go on top 25-24 after the third quarter and then Stiverson imposed her will in the fourth quarter.

 

Stiverson started the fourth with two quick baskets to fuel a 4-0 start and the Lady Sages opened up a 29-24 lead and the Lady Cardinals would not get any closer than 29-26 the rest of the way.

 

Stiverson went 8-for-10 from the foul line in the fourth, finishing 9-for-11 for th game and finished with a team-high 19 points. She was the Piatt/DeWitt County ServPro Player of the Game. 

 

Rennie Fultz added 16 for the Lady Sages.

 

Oakley led the Lady Cardinals with 20 points and finished 14-for-16 at the foul line. Warrensburg-Latham went 19-for-24 at the line as a team while Monticello finished 18-for-28.

 

The Lady Cardinals drop to 8-6 overall and will be the top seed in the girl's Macon Count Tournament.

 

Monticello improves to 9-3 overall.
