Monticello Rolls GCMS to Advance to Holiday Hoopla Championship

The Monticello Sages got off to the fast start they lacked in the first two games of the Holiday Hoopla and rolled GCMS 67-34 to advance to the tournament title game tomorrow night.

The Sages stormed to a 17-0 lead with 3:01 to play in the first quarter on a basket by Joey Sprinkle that put all five starters in the scoring column.

Monticello scored 14 of its first 21 points in the paint and scored 11 points off turnovers in the opening frame.

Playing mostly its JV squad in the second quarter, Triston Foran scored five straight points to open the quarter and finished with all seven of his points in the second quarter. Drew Shepard came off the bench and scored six points.

Foran was the Piatt/DeWitt County ServPro Player of the Game.

In 17 minutes, Ben Cresap scored 16 points to lead all scorers. Sprinkle and Tanner Buehnerkemper scored nine points apiece as Monticello ran its record to 13-0 on the season.

Monticello's 38 points in the paint helped the Sages shoot 52-percent from the floor. They turned 13 Falcons turnovers into 19 points and grabbed 11 offensive rebounds on the way to 14 second-chance points.

The Sages also dished out 13 assists to seven turnovers.

Monticello moves on the tournament title game Wednesday night at 7:30 pm. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
