In a thrilling game heard on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Brendan Niebrugge hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 1:12 left and Teutopolis was able to hold off Monticello for a 54-51 win, ending a 14-game win streak to start the season for the Sages in non-conference high school boy's basketball action from Teutopolis High School.
The Sages had chances late but turned the ball over on a pair of possessions and had a missed chance under the basket with under a minute left.
Monticello had won 14 in a row to start the season, including a tournament title at its own Holiday Hoopla last week.
The Sages finished the final 1:20 of the first quarter on a 6-0 run to turn a 16-11 deficit into a 17-16 lead after the first quarter but the Wooden Shoes broke things open in the second quarter and led 31-24 after the first half.
Monticello rallied in the third quarter, outscoring T-town 21-11 to take a 45-42 lead after three.
After shooting 5-for-11 in the first half from three, the Wooden Shoes shot 3-for-9 in the second half from distance. It was just enough to hold off the Sages.
They outrebounded Monticello 27-24 for the game and used 14 offensive rebounds to score 15-second chance points.
The Sages outscored the Wooden Shoes in transition 20-0.
Ben Cresap led all scorers with 19 points for Monticello. He was the Piatt/DeWitt County ServPro Player of the Game.
Caleb Seimer scored 14 points with 12 in the first half for T-town with a game-high nine rebounds helping the Wooden Shoes move to 10-3 on the season.
