Big Third Quarter Sends Monticello Past Olympia

In a game heard on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Monticello used a big third quarter to create separation and blow by Olympia for a 69-41 win Tuesday night in Illini Prairie Conference boy's basketball action from Olympia High School.

Leading 31-26 at the intermission, Monticello scored six straight points in the first minute and 40 seconds. A Pierce Saegan basket with 5:15 to play in the third drew the Spartans within 37-28, and that was the closest they'd be the rest of the way.

The Sages proceed to go 15-2 run and led 57-32 after three.

Ben Cresap scored 22 points to lead all scorers. Cresap grabbed six boards and was the Piatt/DeWitt County ServPro Player of the Game.

Dylan Ginalick added 17 points and Joey Sprinkle added 11 points.

The Sages as a team dished out 17 assists on their 28 baskets and committed only seven turnovers.

The Sages shot 57-percent from the floor for the game, going 17-for-28 in the second half. Olympia shot just 38-percent from the floor for the game and was led by Owen Dare's 14 points.

The Sages only outrebounded the Spartans 28-25 but scored 26 points off 18 turnovers and added 44 points in the paint with 24 points in transition.

The Spartans drop to 4-14 overall and 0-2 in the Illini Prairie.

Monticello moves to 19-1 and is 3-0 in the conference. The Sages host PBL Friday night at 7 pm at the Sievers Center at Monticello High School.
