Meridian Outlasts Monticello

In a game heard on WEZC, Meridian outlasted Monticello in a terrific non-conference hihg school boy's basketball game, 67-56 Saturday night from the Sievers Center at Monticello High School.

 

Ranked seventh in the latest Class 1A high school boy's basketball poll, Meridian pulled away in the fourth quarter using stifling defense to keep an efficient Monticello team at bay as Monticello Coach Kevin Roy will have to wait at least one more game for career victory 300. 

 

The Sages struggled offensively, shooting 39.6-percent from the floor and went just 2-for-16 from the three-point line.

 

Ben Cresap and Dylan Ginalick paced the Sages with 14 points apiece and Tanner Buehnerkemper added 11 points. 

 

Monticello was outrebounded 20-8 in the second half and 32-24 for the game. Meridian had 11 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points. The Hawks also had 20 points off 11 Monticello turnovers. 

 

The game featured 41 total fouls. The Hawks made 19-of-24 free throws while the Sages finished 16-for-19 from the free-throw line.

 

Graham Meisenhelter finished with 20 points. Grant Meisenhelter added 17 points and Drew Hurelbrink scored ten of his 12 points in the second half for Meridian. 

 

Meridian moves to 15-5 overall while Monticello falls to 20-2. 

 

The Sages travel to Prairie Central Tuesday night for an Illini Conference matchup before returning home next Friday night against St. Joseph-Ogden.
