Big Third Quarter Buffers Monticello Past Tolono Unity

Joey Sprinkled scored the first eight points of the third quarter en route to a season-high 17 points as Monticello held off Tolono Unity 58-45 and clinched the Illini Prairie Conference regular season title in high school boy's basketball action from the Sievers Center at Monticello High School.

 

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailnews.com, Sprinkle had another terrific game on the glass with a game-high eight boards. He scored eight of his 17 in the frame as Monticello held a 20 point lead after the three quarters. 

 

The Rockets reduced the lead to 12 at one point in the fourth quarter but Monticello did enough to keep them at bay. Triston Foran scored 11 of his 15 points off the bench in the second half and had seven in the fourth quarter to help keep Monticello ahead by double digits throughout the fourth quarter.

 

Sprinkle and Foran were the Piatt/DeWitt County co-Players of the Game. 

 

Dylan Ginalick added ten points for Monticello who finish the regular season 26-3 overall and 8-1 in the Illini Prairie Conference.

 

The Sages scored 40 of its 58 points in the paint and shot 56-percent from the floor after a 60-percent shooting performance in the first half. 

 

Monticello had 15 assists on its 23 field goals and only turned the ball over five times. 

 

The Sages now head to Regionals next Wednesday where they will take on the winner of Saturday's quarterfinal game between Paxton-Buckley-Loda and Clifton Central. The Sages are the top seed in the Clifton Central sub-sectional. Game time from GCMS next Wednesday is 6 pm and can be heard on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
