Monticello Gets By Prairie Central in Overtime for Regional Title

With 1:05 left in regulation, Monticello trailed 47-43, Dylan Ginalick buried a three-pointer with 45 seconds left to tie the game at 47 and the Sages were able to rally past Prairie Central in overtime for a 55-51 Regional Championship Friday night from GCMS High School in Class 2A high school boy's basketball action.

 

Ginalick was at the line with Monticello trailing 47-43 making the first of the double-bonus pair and chased down a loose ball rebound on the wing and was left all alone and buried the three-pointer to tie the game at 47.

 

The Hawks missed a final shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. 

 

Prairie Central went up 50-47 to start overtime but Ben Cresap buried a three-pointer on the left wing to tie the game at 50. After Andy Krenz made one of two free throws to put the Hawks up 51-50, Trevor Fox was fouled and made both free throws to put the Sages up for good, 52-51. 

 

30 seconds later, Cresap made two more free throws to put Monticello up 54-51. After the Hawks were forced to foul with 3.7 seconds left, Triston Foran missed both free throws but Tanner Buehnerkemper hauled in his game-high ninth and final rebound, perhaps his biggest of the season and made the second of two free throws to seal the Regional title for the Sages.

 

Monticello struggled mightily from the free throw line early, going just 1-for-6 through the first three quarters but finished 11-for-18 in the fourth quarter and overtime. 

 

The Sages shot just 27-percent from the floor in the first half and were outrebounded 38-29.

 

Cresap led Monticello with 15 points while Ginalick added 14 points. Buehnerkemper scored nine points with nine rebounds. 

 

The Sages had ten assists on its 17 baskets with just six turnovers. 

 

Monticello had 20 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds.

 

After shooting 55-percent in the first half, Monticello was able to limit the Hawks to 39-percent for the game.

 

Monticello went just 9-for-26 from distance while Prairie Central went 4-for-14. 

 

There were six ties and seven lead changes for the game. 

 

Prairie Central finishes the season 24-8 overall.

 

Monticello moves to 29-3 overall and will take on Herscher in the Clifton Central Sectional semifinal Tuesday night at 7 pm.
