UPDATED: Monticello Rolls BCC To Advance to State

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, the Monticello Sages used a big second quarter, including four three-pointers, to beat Bloomington Central Catholic 62-44 in Class 2A Supersectional action from the Bank of Springfield Center Monday night and advance to the Class 2A state finals in Champaign.

 

Leading 9-8 after the first quarter, Dylan Ginalick hit back-to-back three-pointers sandwiched between a Colin Hayes basket for the Saints, Triston Foran added another three followed by a Ben Cresap three-pointer with 4:11 to play, allowing Monticello to open a 21-10 lead. 

 

The Sages led 25-12 at the intermission and opened up a 35-20 lead after Trevor Fox hit a three at the 4:17 mark of the third. 

 

The Sages finished the third quarter with a nifty layup from Ginalick and Monticello forced a turnover that Fox threw up for a last second shot at the buzzer of the third and banked it in to make a 46-27.

 

Ginalick scored a game-high 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out five assists. Ginalick was the Piatt/DeWitt County ServPro Player of the Game.

 

Fox finished with 13 points for the Sages while Cresap added 10 points and Joey Sprinkle finished with nine points.

 

The Sages 12th straight win was highlighted by 14 assists on 20 field goals and only five turnovers. Monticello forced BCC into nine turnovers and converted those into 13 points. 

 

The Saints shot 47-percent from the floor for the game while shooting 7-for-13 from three-point range.

 

Monticello outrebounded BCC 25-19. Cole Certa led the Saints with 10 points as they finish their season 20-16 overall. 

 

Monticello moves to 32-3 overall and will battle Rockridge who beat Rockford Lutheran 57-52 Monday night. Game time Thursday afternoon is 2:30 pm from the State Farm Center in Champaign and can be heard on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
