Illinois State Routes Illinois

Illinois baseball dropped their Tuesday evening midweek game at Illinois State, 10-1.

 

Freshman RHP Calvin Shepherd earned his first start of the season for the Illini, throwing 3.0 innings while giving up one earned run and striking out four. Illinois (13-13, 5-1) recorded ten hits on the evening but only plated one while leaving 12 runners on base.

 

Ryan Hampe had a solid day at the plate for Illinois, going 2-for-3 as the only Illini batter with multiple hits. Connor Milton also added a pinch-hit double in the seventh inning, his first extra base hit of the season. 

 

The Redbirds (11-11 overall, 1-2 MVC) scored the game's first 10 runs as the Fighting Illini's (13-13 overall, 5-1 B1G) lone run came on a ground ball that bounced off of first base and over the head of the ISU first baseman.

 

Senior Colin Wyman provided five scoreless innings to get the win.

 

An Illinois throwing error resulted in an ISU run in the 2nd inning before the 'Birds scored once more in the 3rd and 4th innings to lead, 3-0.

 

Sophomore Luke Cheng laced a two-run double before sophomore Kayden Beauregard recorded a two-RBI single to break the game open and give the 'Birds a 7-0 lead after five innings.

 

A two-RBI single from Cheng in the 6th pushed the Redbird lead to 10-0.

 

Sophomore Erik Kubiatowicz threw the 6th and 7th innings, allowing a run on a single that bounced off of first base before freshman Zach Holcomb threw two scoreless innings to close the game.

 

Illinois State is scheduled play at Western Illinois on today before traveling to Kansas from April 8-10.

 

Illinois is back on the road for another Big Ten series this weekend, traveling to Iowa City for three games at Iowa.
