HS Baseball: Monticello Explodes Late for Win

The Monticello Sages scored 13-unanswered runs late to blow by Salt Fork 17-7 in non-conference high school boy's baseball action Wednesday afternoon from Monticello High School.

 

Wednesday matchup was moved up 30-minutes to a 4 pm start time with weather in the area all morning and anticipated rain in the early evening.

 

The Sages went up 4-2 in the fourth inning but Salt Fork answered with a five-run fifth inning and then the flood gates opened for the Monticello offense. The Sages scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 10-7 and walked it off with a seven-run sixth inning for the ten-run rule win.

 

Joey Sprinkle went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, Biniam Lienhart finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a double. Jacob Trusner continued his recent tear with a 2-for-4 afternoon including a double and a pair of RBIs. Thomas Swartz reached base three times going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

 

Wade Carroll and Luke Teschke drove in two runs apiece from the bottom of the order for Monticello.

 

Dawlton Chupp went five innings allowing all seven runs, six were earned, on seven hits, two walks and struck out six.

 

Spencer Mitze went a scoreless inning of relief.

 

The Sages are 11-5 overall and will take Paxton-Buckley-Loda in Illini Prairie Conference action this afternoon.
