Maryland Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader With Illinois to Take Weekend Series

Illinois lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader with No. 24 Maryland at Illinois Field. The Illini took game one into extra innings with the Terrapins, losing 13-9 in the tenth, and dropped the series finale 7-4. 

 

Justin Janas went 3-for-4 with four RBI, four runs scored, and a home run on the afternoon. Illinois is now 20-17 overall and 11-4 in the B1G, while Maryland is 32-8 (9-3 B1G).

 

Down three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Illinois scored three to send the game to extra innings as Cam McDonald drove in the tying run on a two-out RBI single. The Illini ended up dropping the game in the tenth inning as Maryland scored four runs to jump ahead 13-9.

 

A combined six home runs were hit as the two teams totaled 22 runs and 27 hits in game one. Janas continued his big weekend for the Illini, picking up his second home run of the series with two outs in the seventh inning, a game-tying three run shot. Danny Doligale also homered in the first Illinois at bat of the game, his third home run of the season.

 

llinois opened up the scoring in game two with three runs in the first inning before Maryland responded with four in the next two innings. The Illini trailed the Terrapins by three runs heading into the final frame and were unable to mount a comeback effort, dropping their first Big Ten series this season with the game two loss.

 

Jacob Campbell led the Illini at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Doligale added a 3-for-4 night with a run scored while Branden Comia had two hits and an RBI.

 

McDonald has reached base in every game this season, a 47-game on base streak dating back to 5/8/21.

 

Illinois is now 11-4 in the B1G. The Illini travel to Peoria to take on Bradley Wednesday.
