HS Baseball: Monticello Doubles Up Eureka

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, a three-run third inning was all the offense Luke Teschke needed as the sophomore fired six innings of two-run ball to lead Monticello to a 4-2 win over Eureka in Class 2A high school boy's baseball sectional semifinal action Thursday from Millikin University in Decatur.

Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Jack Buckalew saved a run with a diving catch on a line drive to right field by JJ Boles. In the top of the third, Buckalew drove in a run on a base hit. Thomas Swartz followed with a sac-fly RBI to center field and Colton Vance hit his third double of the postseason that drove in the fourth and final run for the Sages.

Teschke allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts. He set down 11 of the first 12 batters he faced but labored through the final two innings to get his second win this postseason.

Joey Sprinkle closed the game out with a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout.

Sprinkle and Jacob Trusner finished 2-for-4 while Buckalew was 1-for-2 with a walk. Vance was 1-for-3.

Ben Jablonski finished 2-for-2 with a triple and a walk for the Hornets.

Eureka finishes the regular season 26-7 while Monticello moves to 22-8.

The Sages will take on Illini Prairie Conference rival St. Joe-Ogden Saturday morning at 11 am at Millikin University. Hear all the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
