Monticello Coach Pleased With Friday Win and Better Start

The Monticello football team picked up a big 39-6 victory over a Milwaukee Academy of Science football team that brought to central Illinois a great challenge for the Sages.

Coach Cully Welter was pleased to head home Friday with a win and called it a grind all night noting it didn't feel like a 30-plus point win for his team.

The Novas were big, fast and very athletic and Coach Welter felt like his team really went to work on the little things. While some things slipped through the cracks, he felt they hung tough and came out with a win.

Coach Welter took note of the linebacker play Friday night. Pointing to the pick six by Spencer Mitze as time was expiring on the first half, Jacob Long made a key block on that play and junior Luke Teschke had a sack and interception for a touchdown for Monticello.

A pair of 2-1 football teams square off Friday night in Bloomington when the Sage visit Central Catholic. The Saints fell in an overtime thriller to PBL Friday and will be looking to get back on the winning track in what is a challenging stretch of the BCC schedule.

Game time is 7 pm and can be heard on 95.9 FM WEZC.
