Illinois Defense Stepping Up With FCS Powerhouse Chattanooga Coming to Champaign Thursday

If Illinois can take care of business Thursday night when the 10th ranked team in the FCS Chattanooga comes to Champaign, Illinois enters a big contest at Wisconsin next Saturday at 3-1.

The key to the Illini's success so far has been an effect ground game and a defense that is vastly improved from last season. Illini beat writer Bob Asmussen says the health of Keith Randolph, Jr. has been huge for Illinois this season.

Illinois defensive coordinator Ryan Walters is certain to start gaining interest in head coaching jobs in the next year or two and Asmussen says the buzz around the building in Champaign is this is the best coaching staff the program has ever had.

In college football, head coaches get a very short leash to prove their worth to a program and for Asmussen, he believes second-year coach Bret Bielema is the right man for Illinois and has them trending in a very positive direction.
