Monticello Blows Away Rantoul

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Monticello scored four first-quarter touchdowns and blew away Rantoul 55-6 Friday night in Illini Prairie Conference high school football action from Rantoul.

Rantoul marched down the field on the opening drive but stalled at the 20-yard line on fourth down and the Sages answered with a drive that culminated with Tylor Bundy carrying it in from four yards out.

On the ensuing drive, Monticello recovered a fumble and scored when senior quarterback Drew Sheppard kept it for a 2-yard run to go up 13-0.

After the Eagles went 3-and-out on the next possession, Spencer Mitze went up for a jump ball along the sideline and took it in for a 54-yard score to put the Sages up 20-0.

Monticello forced Rantoul into another three and out and on the ensuing possession, Sheppard got a first and goal snap of as time expired and Bundy finished the play scoring from seven yards out to put Monticello up 27-0.

From there, Sheppard would connect on touchdown passes to Trey Welter, again to Mitze and Bundy would find the end zone again to stake the Sages to a 48-6 halftime lead.

Bundy scored again on the opening drive of the second half to put Monticello up 55-6.

In just two quarters, Sheppard finished 10-for-17 for 208 yards and three touchdowns passing. He also ran for 34 yards and a score on four carries.

With a couple of second-half touches, Bundy reached the 100-yard plateau on eight carries and found the end zone four times. Bundy's efforts earned him the Piatt/DeWitt Counties ServPro Player of the Game award.

Mitze finished with four catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns while Welter hauled in four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Monticello improves to 4-2 overall and will host Paxton-Buckley-Loda next Friday night at 7 pm. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
