HS BBBall: Monticello Survives Maroa-Forsyth

Trey Welter scored a career-high 26 points and Monticello survived a frantic comeback by Maroa-Forsyth for a 54-48 win Saturday afternoon at the Sievers Center at Monticello High School.

The Trojans trailed by as many as 18 with 7:07 left in the game but had trimmed the lead to 45-39 at the 2:04 mark after they had a steal in the backcourt on Monticello's inbound.

The Trojans would get within four after AJ Massey hit his third straight three-pointer with 14 seconds left but the Trojans were out of timeouts and Welter sunk two free throws to put the game out of reach.

Drew Sheppard added nine points and five rebounds for Monticello. Will Ross had a career-best eight rebounds to go with five points for the Sages.

Kaiden Maurer led Maroa-Forsyth with 13 points and five assists. Massey and Mitch Williams added nine points apiece.

Welter's efforts Saturday earned him the Serv Pro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties Player of the Game.

Monticello moves to 3-3 while Maroa-Forsyth falls to 2-5.

The Sages travel to Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond Tuesday night for a 7 pm tip. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
