It was a record-setting afternoon for Monticello in an 80-58 win over Newton from the Christie Clinic St. Joe-Ogden Shootout Saturday afternoon in neutral site non-conference high school boy's basketball action.
Trey Welter scored a career-best 32 points and set a Shootout record with seven three-pointers made and tied a school record for three-pointers made in a single game with Zach Fisher and Clint Brubaker. Monticello's 18 three-pointers made set a team record, breaking the mark set by last year's state-runner-up team, also at the Christie Clinic Shootout against Manteno.
Monticello shot 57 percent from the floor for the game and 70 percent from distance.
Raiden Colbert scored a career-best 21 points for the Sages.
Welter's efforts earned him the ServPro of Piatt DeWitt County Player of the Game award.
Newton falls to 12-5 overall while Monticello wins its second straight to go to 10-6 overall.
The Sages visit Clinton Tuesday night.
