BCC Pulls Away From Monticello

In a game heard on WEZC, Joe Certa scored 29 points and propelled Bloomington Central Catholic over Monticello 79-61 in Illini Prairie Conference high school boy's basketball action from the Sievers Center Friday night at Monticello High School.

Certa went 15-for-15 from the foul line as the two teams combined to shoot 62 free throws and attempted a combined 37 field goals.

Monticello jumped out to a 16-12 first-quarter lead but BCC turned up the defense in the second quarter and led 29-24 at the break.

Monticello got within 53-50 at the 6:444 mark of the fourth quarter but that was as close as the Sages would get the rest of the way. Certa hit back-to-back three pointers to open up a 59-50 lead and free throws would take BCC the rest of the way.

Monticello continued its balanced scoring Friday led by Trey Welter's 19 points. Drew Sheppard added 17 points and eight rebounds. Will Ross was a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Sheppard's efforts again Friday earned him another Serv Pro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game award.

BCC is now 12-6 overall while Monticello drops to 11-7. They are 1-1 in the Illini Prairie Conference.

The Sages return home Tuesday night to host Olympia. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
