In a game heard Thursday night on WHOW, the Clinton Lady Maroons fell at home to Warrensburg-Latham, 47-43, in CIC conference play.
The Cardinals started strong, doubling up Clinton 14-7 in the first quarter. They built a ten point lead by half, and led by twelve after three. However, the young Lady Maroons battled back in the fourth to make a game of it. Clinton had the ball down two points in the final minute, but a turnover and some key Cardinal free throws ended the hopes of a comeback.
Sophomore Brenna Dutcher led the Cardinals with 14 points, including 5 of 6 shooting at the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Senior Morgan Jones added 10 for Warrensburg. They improve to 16-9 on the year, and 3-2 in conference.
The Maroons were led offensively by Freshman Clara Dempsey with 15 points, which included going 6 of 6 at the line. Junior MaKayla Koeppel was named the WHOW / Serv Pro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game. She added 8 points, several steals, and also led the Lady Maroons in rebounds. Sophomore Reagan Filkin and Freshman Avery Smith each added 8 points for Clinton as well. Clinton falls to 11-14 on the season, and also 3-2 in conference.
These two teams will next play each other Saturday in the opening round of the CIC tournament. That game takes place Saturday afternoon at 4:30 in Warrensburg.
