HS BBBall: Monticello Rallies Past Tolono Unity

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Monticello came from behind twice to get by Tolono Unity 50-46 in an Illini Prairie Conference high school boy's basketball classic from Tolono Tuesday night.

 

The Rockets jumped in front 5-0 less than 90 seconds into the game. Monticello battled back and the score was within one after each quarter. Unity led 10-9 after the first, 21-20 at the half, and 30-29 at the end of the third.

 

The Sages started the fourth quarter on a 5-2 run after Henry Thomas scored the first five points of the frame to go up 26-20. But the Sages stayed the course and Tyler Blythe's floater from the right elbow put Monticello in front 29-28 with 1:40 to play in the third. 

 

The Sages scored the first four of the fourth quarter to go up 33-30, a lead they would not relinquish but not without a challenge from the Rockets.

 

Monticello's Trey Welter and Unity's Will Cowan traded three's and Tyler Blythe got in on the action as well. Welter had 11 of his 13 in the fourth quarter, landing blows efforts for a comeback by knocking down a trio of triples to keep the Rockets at bay. 

 

Despite being held scoreless in the first half, Welter offered Monticello brilliant passing on the offensive end to keep the Sages close. He finished with five assists and was the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game.

 

The win for Monticello snapped a four-game losing streak and was the 17th straight over Unity. The Rockets' last victory over Monticello came in nearly 11 years ago when the Rockets rolled Monticello 102-70 in a Regional Championship game at the Rocket Center.

 

Monticello finishes the regular season 15-13 overall and 4-5 in the Illini Prairie Conference. It's off to the postseason now for the Sages who host Paxton-Buckley-Loda in a Regional quarterfinal matchup from the Sievers Center at Monticello High School.
