HS Baseball: Young Hilltoppers Hope to Take Next Step Forward

Just two years removed from an incredible run to the state tournament in Clas 1A boy's baseball, the Mt. Pulaski Hilltoppers are hoping a young collection of talent and now experience will propel them back to Peoria.

Mt. Pulaski Coach Joel Washko indicates his team was very young last year and gained valuable experience. With a solid freshman group that has had success at the junior high level as well as a number of three-year starters, the Hilltoppers feel they have what it takes to get back to Peoria.

Depth is one thing about this edition of his team that has Coach Washko excited. From several pitchers to kids that can move around the diamond, the Hilltoppers will have plenty of options this year.

According to Coach Washko, All-Stater Landon Smith will be a staple in the Mt. Pulaski lineup. Additionally, he is optimistic about some of his players that are hitting the ball harder this spring.

Early on, Coach Washko feels his team needs to learn to handle the ups and downs of a baseball game better and stay at an even emotional level rather than let the highs and lows of the game impact their demeanor.

Mt. Pulaski will open the season on Monday, March 20 hosting Central A&M.
