HS BBALL: Maroons Fall To Meridian

In a game heard Tuesday evening on WHOW, the Clinton Maroons fell to the visiting Meridian Hawks, 3-2, in Central Illinois Conference baseball action.

Both teams entered the game looking for their second win of the season.  It looked like Meridian would get on the board first, advancing a runner to third in the top of the first inning, but Clinton was able to escape the early jam.  From there, both teams traded scoreless innings until the bottom of the fourth when Clinton broke through and scored first.  Jack Manning reached on an error, and was later driven in on Colten Walker's RBI single.  Meridian answered with a run in the top of the 5th, but Clinton would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning.  Preston Curtis led off with a single, and later came home on a bases loaded walk to Mason Walker.  After Walker's no out walk, the Maroons however were unable to push any other runs across. Meridian then tied the game up, 2-2, in the top of the sixth, and scored the go ahead run an inning later when Ashton Dawson was singled in by Will Gorden.  Clinton threatened with two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't push a run across.  Giving the Hawks the 3-2 road win.

Clinton's Brooks Cluver took the loss in relief. He allowed one run on three hits, and one walk in his inning of work in the seventh.  Mason Walker pitched well taking the no decision.  He threw 6 innings of 6 hit ball.  He struck out nine while allowing two runs, and walking two.

Meridian's Dylan Patterson got the win in relief.  He allowed no runs and no hits in two innings of work while walking and striking out one each.  At the plate the Hawks were led by Will Gorden's 2 for 3 day with two runs batted in.

The Maroons notables at the plate included Colten Walker's 1-4 with an rbi.  Mason Walker walked twice and brought home a run, and Josh Bass went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.  Bass was named the WHOW / Serv Pro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player Of The Game.  The freshman catcher caught four runners stealing in the game, in addition to his hard hit double.

Meridian improves to 2-3 overall, and 2-1 in the CIC.  They travel to Taylorville Wednesday.

The Maroons fall to 1-4 on the season, and 0-3 in conference.  They'll travel to Williamsville Wednesday.  Our next Maroons "Game of the Week" broadcast is next Tuesday afternoon when Clinton baseball hosts Warrensburg-Latham at 4:30pm on all WHOW platforms!
