Illinois State Upends Illinois in Champaign, 12-9

The Illinois State baseball team topped Illinois, 12-9, at Illinois Field on Tuesday.

Jacob Schroeder gave Illinois a fast start, when he launched a three-run shot in the first to give the Illini a 3-0 lead. The Redbirds hit back for six runs in the second but Drake Westcott collected a pair of RBI with a bases loaded single in the third to make it 6-5.

Illinois State (10-13 overall)  got three-run homers from third-year junior Auggie Rasmussen and fourth-year junior Adrian Flores to take a 10-5 lead.

Alex Vera, who entered the contest in relief in the fifth, kept the Illini in the ballgame by allowing just two runs on five hits over 3.2 innings of work, striking out a career-high nine batters.

Third-year junior Elijah Dale threw two scoreless innings to record the save while freshman Tyrelle Chadwick fired three innings to earn the win after being forced to warm up on the game mound.

Freshman Luke Lawrence hit his first career home run while second-year sophomore Noah Rabin had four hits as every Redbird in the starting lineup had at least one hit and either scored or knocked in a run.
