HS Softball: Clinton Tops Eureka

In a game heard Wednesday afternoon on WHOW, the Clinton Lady Maroons topped the visiting Eureka Hornets, 6-3, in non-conference softball action.

Eureka opened the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI groundout that scored Reagan Linder.  Linder would lead the Hornets offensively going 4 for 4 with two triples and a run batted in.

The Eureka lead was short lived as the Lady Maroons answered back in the bottom of the first on a Heidi Humble rbi single.  Clinton would take the lead in the bottom of the second, going up 2-1 when Avery Smith crossed the plate.  The Hornets would tie it again in the top of the third at two each, but Clinton took the lead for good in the bottom of the third on Sarah Mills' RBI single.  The Lady Maroons added two more in the fourth on Aliviyah Haynes' two run single to lead 5-2.  Each team would add a run in the fifth, but Clinton would hold on.

Ashley Armstrong pitched seven solid innings picking up the win for Clinton.  She allowed 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out 7, and walking none.  At the plate, the Lady Maroons were led by Alaina Soberalski's 3-hit day.  The Senior also made a great inning ending double play in the field in her last home game to earn the WHOW / Serv Pro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game. Humble and Haynes both finished 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, and Mea Kivlehan went 2 for 4 for Clinton, who as a team tallied 14 hits on the day.

The Lady Maroons improve to 8-20 on the season, while Eureka falls to 5-18.  The Lady Maroons travel to Tri-City on Friday to wrap up their regular season.  They will travel to Monticello on Monday for the first round of the 2A Regionals.
