HS Baseball: Tremont Tops Clinton In 2A Regional Semis

In a game heard Wednesday afternoon on WHOW, the Clinton Maroons fell to the Tremont Turks, 6-0, in the Class 2A Regional Semifinals at Tri-Valley High School.

Tremont jumped out to a one run lead in the bottom of the first when a lead off error turned into a run on a Griffin Meeker sacrifice fly.  Clinton was able to hold off the Turks until a four run third inning put the lead at 5-0.  Tremont added another run in the bottom of the sixth.

Clinton was stymied at the plate most of the day by Tremont's Ethan Zaayenga (Zahn-gay.)  The senior picked up the win on five innings of work in which he allowed only one hit while striking out eight.  Meeker pitched two innings of relief allowing only two hits, and striking out two.  Caleb Edwards led the Turks at the plate going 3 for 4 with a double.  Tremont improves to 21-5 on the year, and advances to face either Tri-Valley or Bloomington Central Catholic in Saturday's Regional Championship.

Clinton's Jack Manning was named the WHOW / Serv Pro of DeWitt/Piatt County Player of the Game. The freshman went the distance on the mound despite the third inning struggles.  He finished with six innings pitched allowing six runs, three earned, while walking two and striking out one. Manning was one of three Maroons to get a hit Wednesday.  Preston Curtis and Aiden Toohill were the others.

The Maroons end their season at 11-12 overall.
