Argenta-Oreana Schools Hoping Facilities, Stability in Coaching Positions Increases Participation in Sports

Schools across the country are battling a decline in participation in extracurricular activities and when you already have a limited pool to draw from, a northern Macon County district is really feeling the pinch.

Mike Williams is the Athletic Director of the Argenta-Oreana Schools and explains COVID really impacted its numbers in the sports programs.

According to Williams, Argenta-Oreana is hoping having a consistent presence of coaches in front of players will help build relationships and get kids out to play. Additionally, the district has upgraded several programs fields and facilities in the five to ten years.

Williams points out the Argenta-Oreana gymnasium was forced to be rebuilt just before COVID but beyond that, they have been able to put turf on its football, soccer, baseball and softball fields in the last several years as well.

According to Williams, the district has been fortunate they can tap into the one-cent sales tax revenues that allow for facility updates. He indicates that has been a big boost to the things they are doing in the district.
