Lady Maroons Fall To Olympia In Season Opener

In a game heard Monday night on WHOW, the Clinton Lady Maroons fell to the Olympia Spartans, 54-49, in both team's opener of the 10th Annual Turkey Tussle at Clinton High School's Gene Vance Court.

The game was a back and forth affair through much of the first half.  Olympia led 10-9 after the first quarter, and at one point led 22-20 with about two minutes left in the second. The Spartans got hot late in the second, and went on a 10-0 run to close the half with a 32-20 lead.

Olympia started the third with another 6-0 run before the Lady Maroons began clawing their way back into the game.  In fact, a rare zone press from the Lady Maroons through much of the second half created opportunities a Lady Maroons run.  Clinton would cut the lead to 5 at the end of the third, and even take the lead a few times in the fourth. However, the Spartans did just enough to hold onto the 54-49 win.

Clinton coach Josh Williams said after the game that Olympia's size and rebounding ability were keys to the game.

Olympia was led by Hannah Cleveland with 17 points. Shelby Finchum had 14, and Kat Springer added 11. The Spartans next play Eureka Wednesday night at 5pm at Clinton.

The Lady Maroons were led by Avery Smith with 14 points.  She was named the WHOW / Serv Pro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties Player of the Game.  Reagan Filkin added 11, and MaKayla Koeppel had 10 for Clinton.

The Lady Maroons next face Eisenhower at 8pm Wednesday night. Our next broadcast of Lady Maroons Basketball on WHOW is Tuesday, November 21st, when Clinton hosts Athens on all WHOW platforms.
