HS BBBall: Monticello Falls Short to Riverton

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, the Monticello Sages could not find any offense in the fourth quarter as Riverton's defense carried them to a 49-43 win on Tuesday night in Riverton in non-conference high school boy's basketball action.

Monticello led 34-29 going to the final frame but Riverton came out with a defensive intensity the Sages offense could not match and had several turnovers which allowed the Hawks to take the game over as they outscored Monticello 20-9 in the final frame.

Last week the Sages had more assists than turnovers but Tuesday night, they could not handle the Hawks pressure and committed 18 turnovers.

Riverton limited Monticello to 31-percent shooting.

Trey Welter led Monticello with 13 points. Ike Young was terrific on the boards and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. He was the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties Player of the Game.

The Sages outrebounded Riverton 38-31. Monticello shot just 6-for-27 from distance.

Freshman Julian Rice had a game-high 16 points for Riverton. Jason Miller added 10 points and Isaac Crumrine grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds.

Riverton shot 43-percent from the floor and went just 1-for-10 from distance. They made 10-of-19 free throws.

Both teams go to 1-1 overall.

Monticello hosts Marshall Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm. Hear the action on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
