Big Second Half Propels T-Town Over Monticello

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Teutopolis played very well in the second half and pulled away from Monticello 57-44 in non-conference high school boy's basketball action from T-Town Tuesday night.

The Sages held the Wooden Shoes scoreless through the first 4 1/2 minutes of the game which allowed them to go up 12-5 at one in the opening quarter.

By halftime, T-Town would go up 28-26 and pull away in the second half thanks to sharp three-point shooting from Logan Lawson off the bench. The 6-foot-1 senior went 4-for-4 from the beyond the arc, including a heat-check bank three early in the fourth quarter from the right wing.

The Wooden Shoe's Garrett Gaddis paced all-scorers with 18 points.

Monticello was able to start fast thanks to dribble-penetration by Trey Welter who found junior Ike Young for a couple of easy baskets and senior Rai Colbert hit a pair of three's early but T-Town locked down defensively in the second quarter and took away what was working early for the Sages.

Young had seven of his eight points in the first half and Colbert scored nine of his 12 points in the first half.

Welter paced Monticello with 16 points and was the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game.

T-Town shot 55 percent from the floor and 8-for-16 from three, including 4-for-7 in the second half from distance.

Monticello shot just 38.5 percent and 8-for-24 from three.

The Wooden Shoes controlled the boards, outrebounding the Sages 27-20.

Despite increased pressure from T-Town, Monticello controlled the basketball well Tuesday. They only had ten turnovers.

The Wooden Shoes had 30 points in the paint for the game and converted nine offensive rebounds into 14 second-chance points.

The Sages fall to 6-8 overall while the Wooden Shoes improve to 9-5.

Monticello will host IVC in its Illini Prairie Conference opener Friday night at the Sievers Center. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
