HS BBBall: Young's Career Night Leads Monticello Over Bloomington Central Catholic

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Ike Young scored a career-high 21 points and Monticello rallied past Bloomington Central Catholic 58-53 in Illini Prairie Conference boys basketball action in Bloomington Friday night.

 

Young played his best game of the season. He was strong defensively against BCC big man Colin Hayes who scored his 1,000th career point earlier this week.

 

Ike had six rebounds and four steals. Young was the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game.

 

Trey Welter scored 18 points. He hit a three and then another jumper late in the fourth quarter to put the Sages 49-43 and they held on the rest of the way. Welter added four more free throws down the stretch to keep the Saints at bay.

 

Welter finished with 18 points. 

 

BCC freshman Keshaun Manney hit a three with 5:20 to put the Saints up 37-28 but Monticello finished the quarter on a 14-2 run to go ahead for good. 

 

The Saints would tie the game at 43-all when Will Vogel hit a layup but after Jack Weidner put Monticello up 44-43 with a free throw, Welter scored his five straight.

 

Monticello's defense forced 17 turnovers and turned those into 23 points. 

 

BCC controlled the glass 35-27 and scored 17 chance points on 13 offensive rebounds. 

 

The Saints shot just 36 percent and 7-for-26 from distance.

 

The Sages shot 45.5 percent from the floor. They dished out 12 assists on its 20 field goals.

 

BCC falls 9-8 overall and 0-2 in the Illini Prairie Conference.

 

Monticello is 9-9 overall and 2-0 in the Illini Prairie. Weather permitting, Monticello will travel to Olympia Tuesday night and return home to host Paxton-Buckley-Loda.
