HS BBBall: Monticello Gets By Olympia

Monticello had to rally in the fourth quarter to get by Olympia 49-44 in non-conference high school boys' basketball action Tuesday night in Stanford.

 

Olympia's Carson Birky hit a pair of free throws with 50 seconds to play in the third quarter that put the Spartans ahead for the first time in the second half, 37-36. 

 

The Sages started the fourth on a 7-2 run highlighted by a pair of Raiden Colbert three-pointers that put Monticello up 43-39.

 

The Sages would lead by five at the 2:30 mark after Jack Weidner hit a three to put Monticello up 48-43 and Monticello held on from there.

 

While Monticello shot just 35 percent for the game, Olympia only shot 32 percent and committed 16 turnovers.

 

The Sages would score just seven points off those turnovers but scored 21 of its 49 points in the paint Tuesday. 

 

Trey Welter scored 14 points to lead Monticello while Colbert added 13 points. 

 

Dylan Nowaski scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the first half for the Spartans. Owen Alford added 13 points for Olympia.

 

The Sages dished out ten assists on its 16 baskets and committed just nine turnovers.

 

The Spartans fall to 5-13 overall. Monticello goes to 10-9. 

 

The Sages will put its undefeated start in the Illini Prairie Conference on the line Friday night when they host Paxton-Buckley-Loda at 7 pm at the Sievers Center. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
