In a game heard on WHOW, Monticello used stifling defense and steady offense to roll past Mattoon 40-14 in non-conference high school football action Friday night in Monticello.
Senior quarterback, Ike Young accounted for five of the Sages' six touchdowns Friday. He completed 22-of-27 passes for 197 yards with three touchdowns and an interception and ran it 12 times for 78 yards and two scores.
After forcing Mattoon to punt on the opening possession, Young led a methodical drive down the field and Hunter Romano scored his first of two touchdowns with a five yard run to put the Sages up 6-0.
The Monticello defense continued to excellent play with a three-and-out and then Young hit Carter Foran over the middle from 19 yards out for the first of two touchdown receptions for the senior receiver, putting the Sages up 13-0.
Cale Kimrbo raced in a 79-yard touchdown on a short shovel pass for the Green Wave that cut the Monticello lead to 13-7. After a Young interception on the next possession, Monticello go the ball back and Young scored from six yards out for his first of two rushing touchdowns to make it 20-7.
Puzzling clock management late by Mattoon gave the Sages the ball one more chance with 59 seconds remaining in the second half and Monticello scored again as Young found Romano from a yard out with 13 seconds to play for the half to make the score 26-7.
Romano was the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt County Player of the Game.
The Sages started the second half with the football and marched down the field where Young hit Foran for a 15-yard touchdown to put Monticello up 40-7.
The final Sages score was a Young three-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
While he didn't reach the end zone, Nolan Buehnerkemper paced Monticello receivers with eight receptions for 117 yards.
Foran hauled in five catches for 48 yards with two touchdowns.
The Green Wave drops to 0-3 overall.
