Following a convincing win over state-ranked Paxton-Buckley-Loda Friday night, it was Monticello's defense that was the story.
The Sages rolled to a 33-0 upset of the Panthers in week seven action and Coach Cully Welter says his 18 seniors helped set the tone Friday as he felt his team was ready to go against what became a beat up PBL squad throughout the night.
The Sages were penalized eight times for 85 yards and while some flags were frustrating, Coach Welter says they have the weapons this year to get them out of those holes.
The upset over PBL was a positive step forward in the most challenging stretch of the Monticello schedule this year. Going into this week's matchup with Prairie Central, Coach Welter says it is nice to not have their backs against the wall.
Nolan Buehnerkemper led the way for the Sages with nine catches for 180 yards and kicked two field goals in the victory.
The Sages limited PBL to 23 yards of total offense and the Panthers' dynamic runningback, Robert Boyd-Meents was limited to ten yards on nine carries.
Prairie Central comes to Monticello 4-3 overall and winners of three of its last four. Game time Friday night is 7 pm. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
