Monticello played one of its best games of the season Saturday in a 42-14 upset win over Williamsville in Class 3A high school football second-round action in Williamsville.
Senior receiver Carter Foran broke the school's single-season receiving record in the victory piling up over 200 yards and scored three touchdowns. Senior quarterback Ike Young accounted for over 450 total yards of offense and six total touchdowns. Coach Cully Welter was proud of his team Saturday.
The runaway win did not come without some adversity. Monticello was penalized several times early in the game for sideline warnings. Coach Welter - who is rarely openly critical of officiating - was not happy with the over-the-top nature of keeping him off the field to communicate with his skill position players between plays.
Monticello's defense has been led by its front four and five. Coach Welter says while players like Jack Helms and Ryan Frazee are undersized, they get off the ball quickly and can create a lot of havoc in the backfield.
The Sages will host Benton in a Class 3A quarterfinal matchup Saturday at 2 pm. Coach Welter indicates they saw Benton on film when they scouted DuQuoin and felt they were very underrated.
Benton beat Monticello in the second round of the 3A playoffs in 2021 in Benton.
