The revenge tour continues for Monticello this week when they host Benton in Class 3A high school football playoff quarterfinal action on Saturday.
Monticello avenged 2019 and 2023 playoff losses with a first round win over DuQuoin then rolled Williamsville 42-14 last week to avenge a 2012 playoff loss and a 62-14 loss for this year's seniors when they were freshmen.
That's Coach Cully Welter - and Monticello doesn't need a reminder of what happened the last time the Sages played Benton. In the second round of the 3A playoffs in 2021, Benton rolled Monticello 42-14.
Benton enters action 8-3 overall with one of its losses to DuQuoin, whom Monticello knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. Coach Welter says his team cannot get caught up in the conversation that because they beat DuQuoin, they'll beat Benton.
The balance of Benton and its ability to run and pass very effectively is going to be a problem for Monticello's defense. Coach Welter calls their defense very aggressive despite being a little undersized.
Game Saturday is 2 pm. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
