In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Pleasant Plains made 18 field goals with 13 being from beyond the arc as the Cardinals held off short-handed Monticello 53-45 in non-conference, season-opening high school football action Tuesday from the Sievers Center in Monticello.
Monticello led 11-6 at one point in the first quarter, but Plains went on a 10-0 run into the second quarter, fueled by the three ball, to lead 27-20 at the half.
The Sages chipped into the deficit, getting within two at one point in the fourth quarter but could get no closer.
Plains' 13 three-pointers set a Sievers Center record for threes in a game.
Senior Tyler Blythe paced Monticello with his first career double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Colton Vance chipped in with 12 points. Gatsby Grant had seven points and eight rebounds.
Monticello held Plains to 38 percent shooting. The Sages shot 50 percent for the game but finished 4-of-15 from beyond the arc.
Monticello was also without three likely starters Ike Young, Nolan Buehnerkemper, and Carter Foran who are with the football squad this week preparing for Friday's state championship.
Monticello drops to 0-1 overall while Pleasant Plains goes to 1-0.
