It's been the revenge tour of the ages for Monticello High School's football program.
The Sages avenged four losses in the postseason in the Coach Cully Welter era this year with victories over DuQuoin, Williamsville, Benton, and just this last week over Tolono Unity. Coach Welter did not see this kind of a run in his team when the year started.
Just like last week's win over Benton in overtime, Monticello had to grind through a slow and sluggish second-half offensive performance. Coach Welter was a little frustrated at times in Saturday's win over Unity.
Coach Welter credits the coaches around him for believing in his players and establishing good relationships to be able to be positive during a game where they trailed for most of it against not only Monticello's biggest rival but a team that has had its number over the years.
Now its off to take on Lombard Montini Catholic Friday in Normal for the State Championship. Coach Welter knows his team has its work cut out for them and they hope to put on a good performance against a very stout Broncos team.
