In a game heard on WEZC and dewittdailynews.com, Heyworth jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter, but Monticello outscored the Hornets the rest of the way 58-19 the rest of the way to win 65-34 in non-conference high school boys' basketball action from the Sievers Center in Monticello.
The Hornets connected on its first three 3-point attempts to jump out to the early lead but Monticello used a surge hitting five three-pointers in the second quarter to open the game up and held Heyworth to just one second-half field goal.
Gatsby Grant scored a career-high 21 points for Monticello to earn the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties Player of the Game.
No other Sages player scored in double figures. Matthias Rudolph scored nine points off the bench, all late in the fourth quarter. Nolan Buehnerkemper and Maddux Quick each scored eight for the Sages. Buehnerkemper grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Chase Ruppert scored 12 points to lead Heyworth.
The Sages shot 52.2 percent from the floor for the game and made 12-of-24 three-point attempts.
Monticello held the rebounding advantage 35-19 and had 17 assists on 24 field goals.
The Sages outscored Heyworth 22-10 in the paint and had 22 points off 17 Hornets turnovers.
Monticello converted 15 offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points.
Heyworth falls to 3-4 overall.
