HS BBBall: Monticello Topples Oakwood

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Gatsby Grant scored 13 of his game-high 25 points in the third quarter helping fuel a Monticello 64-52 come-from-behind win over Oakwood in high school boy's basketball day one action from the Monticello Holiday Hoopla at the Sievers Center.

 

The Comets were able to open a 33-29 lead at the half, leading by as many as eight points in the first half. 

 

Coming off a career-best 28 in the day's opener over Ridgeview, Grant's encore performance was a huge lift for the Sages to start Hoopla action 2-0. 

 

Monticello beat Ridgeview 78-52 earlier in the day. 

 

Nolan Buehnerkemper was two assists shy of Monticello's first-ever triple-double, finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. 

 

Buehnerkemper played all 32 minutes and facilitated the basketball nearly flawlessly in the second half to earn him the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties player of the game.

 

Maddux Quick scored ten points for the Sages, all in the first half. 

 

Monticello scored 36 points in the paint and turned 13 Oakwood turnovers into 18 points. 

 

The Sages dished out 17 assists on its 28 field goals. They shot 56 percent from the floor for the game. 

 

After starting the season 0-4, Monticello has won four of its last five. They will be put to the test Friday when they battle Tuscola at 3:30 with a chance to play for another Holiday Hoopla championship. Hear Friday's action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
