In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, a 10-0 run in the third quarter put Monticello ahead for good in a 62-56 win over Seneca from the St. Joseph-Ogden Christie Clinic Shootout Saturday in high school boy’s basketball action.
Monticello led 26-25 at the half but the Fighting Irish’s Brayden Simek hit back-to-back three’s to start the half as Seneca went up 31-26.
Nolan Buehnerkemper hit a three, Ike Young finished a traditional three-point play and Tyler Blythe made a mid-range jumper and two free throws to put Monticello in front for good 36-31.
Blythe finished with a team-best 17 points. Gatsby Grant scored 11 of his 13 in the second half and Young had 12 points for the Sages.
Monticello finished 12-of-15 at the foul line.
Simek led Seneca with 19 points. Paxton Giertz had 17 points while Brady Sheedy scored 13 of 17 points in the second half.
The Fighting Irish drop to 14-4 overall.
