Central High School (AL) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off Normal Community 4-3 in the opening of a twin bill for the Ironmen from Orange Beach, Alabama, in high school baseball action on Wednesday.
Normal Community committed four errors, including a crucial error in the seventh inning that put the winning run on base and ultimately came around to score on a second error in the inning.
Gavin Swartz led Normal Community, going 1-for-3 with a double and run scored. Gavin Michaels was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kyle Beaty, Max Heineman, Brady Burkhart, and Andrew Naour collected hits in the loss.
Landyn Corbin went 2 2/3 innings of one-run ball for the Ironmen. His one run allowed was unearned. He struck out three and allowed zero hits and zero walks.
In the second game of the day, a late rally fell short in an 8-5 loss to Athens (AL).
Normal Community fell behind 8-0 four innings.
In the top of the sixth, the Ironmen scored five runs highlighted by Corbin Harris' RBI double to make the score 8-2.
Normal Community put two runners on base with the tying run at the plate in the seventh but could not bring them in.
Harris led the Ironmen in the second game, finishing 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Gavin Van Kanegan drove in a run. Drew Stevens and Gavin Swartz each brought in runs during the five-run frame.
Beckett Weber surrendered five runs in 1 2/3 innings, but only one was earned. He struck out five, walked two, and permitted two hits. The Ironmen committed five more errors in the second game.
They fall to 2-3 overall. Normal Community returns to the Midwest next week to host Peoria Notre Dame on Monday.
