GCMS outlasted Heyworth 5-4 in a nine inning, extra innings marathon on Monday in Heart of Illinois Conference high school softball action in Heyworth.
The Lady Hawks went up 3-1 with a three-run second inning. Heyworth got the three back with a three-run third inning highlighted by a Grace Streenz run-scoring triple that tied the game.
GCMS knotted at 4-4 with a run in the fifth inning and it was all goose-eggs until the Lady Hawks broke the tie in the top of the ninth.
Natalie Kopp was 3-for-4 with two runs scored at the top of the order for the Lady Hornets. Streenz and Emily Rogers were each 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Gabby Dow twirled nine innings for Heyworth. She struck out six, walked four, and permitted 14 hits.
The Lady Hornets are 2-4 overall and start 0-1 in the Heart of Illinois. They travel to Heyworth on Wednesday.
